Getting Dirty
Marieke Staps Soil Lamp
People have their "Aha!" moments. Dutch designer Marieke Staps had hers when she fantasized about her lights running on “free and environmentally-friendly energy forever and ever.” The light upstairs went on and born was the mighty soil lamp. How it works: 1) Dirt is inserted into cells (or vials), 2) water periodically added to the dirt metabolizes stuff in the soil, 3) the process produces electricity, which travels through the copper and zinc plates that are on top of the cells, and 4) light! Goodbye, ugly electrical plugs. Hello, free energy.
