Think Before You Print

We get reminded to think before we print all the time but we rarely stop to ask why. Besides paper,...

Former New Yorker staffer Daphne Beal’s work has appeared everywhere from Vogue to McSweeney’s to the New York Times to The Believer. On the eve of the book tour for her just-released first novel, In the Land of No Right Angles, she chatted with us about motherhood, consumerism, and biking around Manhattan without a seat.

What has been your biggest lifestyle change?
The Greenmarket. I now go two to three times a week and schlep the produce home in a bike basket (though I rarely go for a whole watermelon).

What has been your smallest lifestyle change?
Mailing in a piece of paper to change our power to wind energy.

What was your green turning point?
Having kids and being bombarded with the cavalcade of crap that you supposedly need in order to protect them from the possibility of accidental death at any moment (and to help them reach their full potential) ... Consumerism in general gives the environment a daily beat-down, and I try to be aware of that as much as possible.

What’s your favorite eco element of your home?
A writing desk that I bought used on Atlantic Avenue for $100 when I first moved to New York 15 years ago. I use it every day.

"I get to see the world ... at a speed that makes sense."

What’s your little green secret?
Biking. It makes me so much happier than riding the subway. I feel like I get to see the world, or at least my city, at a speed that makes sense to me.

What do you hope to pass down to your children?

To eat unprocessed, locally grown food. Not just because it’s good for their minds and bodies, but because it’s good for the world. Small, family-owned farms are key to the well-being of the environment.

If you had five minutes in the Oval Office, what would you say?
Please deal with the auto industry, and now. How can we possibly justify the fuel inefficiency of cars today in the U.S.? And while we’re on the topic of petroleum dependency, how about banning all plastic packaging?

Who is your green superhero?
Alice Waters. I love that she’s working on many levels and that she seems to delight in it — schoolyard gardens, delicious restaurant, meetings with legislators. She’s someone whose creativity and idealism propel her into the limelight and then she’s not afraid to make good use of that attention.

"New York state wine is pretty lousy."

What’s your not-so-green guilty pleasure?
Plastic toys for my kids (have you ever tried to argue with a four-year-old boy about the importance of a toy cargo ship?) and imported wine ... New York state wine is pretty lousy.

What smart choices have you made this week?
Biking to work, despite the fact that my bike seat was stolen and I haven’t had a chance to replace it. Fair trade coffee and chocolate. Fresh fish from the farmer’s market.

What’s on your wish list?
Vegetarianism, or at least sustainable seafood-atarianism. And to be a better cook.
